An unidentified motorist with an Uzi machine gun opened fire on a motorcycle officer in Westwood Village early Wednesday afternoon, then escaped, police reported.
Officer Wilbur Carter was not hit and no bystanders were injured, said Police Department spokesman Don Lawrence.
Carter reportedly attempted to stop the driver for a routine traffic violation at Gayley and Kinross avenues about 12:45 p.m., but the car suddenly spun around and sped off.
As the suspect passed the officer, he leaned out the window and fired two rounds, a witness said.
