Late Goal Gives Stars an Exhibition Victory Over Sockers

Ali Kazemaini’s power play goal with 1:42 remaining gave the Tacoma Stars a 7-6 victory over the Sockers in an exhibition match at Tacoma Wednesday night.
Hormoz Tabrizi scored twice for the Sockers (2-3), and Paul Daugherty, Keder, Ralph Black and Brian Quinn added goals for San Diego. Preki led Tacoma (1-1) with two goals and an assist.
Jeff Butts and Brian Craft-Negrete scored as San Diego State gave Coach Chuck Clegg his 99th career victory with a 2-0 victory over Chapman at Orange. Chapman lost its sixth in a row and is 6-12.
Curtis McAlister had five saves for No. 5-ranked SDSU (14-2-2).
UC San Diego, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III, stayed undefeated with a 2-0 victory over The Master’s College.
Scott Rommell and Eric Dingwall each scored in the first half for UCSD (16-0-2).
Vince Bianchi scored three goals in the University of San Diego 4-0 victory over Biola. Mark Dugan had three saves for his second consecutive shutout for the Toreros (9-6-1). Biola is 5-11-3. USD plays its final home match Friday against Santa Clara at 3:30 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Robbe Levene scored with 7:56 remaining as UC San Diego defeated host United States International University, 1-0. Levene scored on an assist from Karin Lindsay as UCSD, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Divison III, improved to 17-0-1. USIU is 5-10.
WOMEN’S BOWLING
Wendy Macpherson of San Diego finished third in the $40,000 Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour Lady Fair Lanes Open at Houston. Macpherson, who won $2,300, was fifth going into the playoffs, where she defeated Judy Soutar and Cindy Coburn before losing to Aleta Sill, 238-170.
WATER POLO
San Diego’s Sunset club men’s water polo team will defend its national indoor championship at the U.S. Naval Academy Friday-Sunday. Sunset defeated NYAC, 6-5, in last year’s final.
Sunset again is one of the favorites to win the 12-team tournament.
