A man performing a mock hanging during a Halloween celebration died today at a Boston hospital after the stunt went wrong, authorities said.

Massachusetts General Hospital spokesman Martin Bander said the man, who was identified as either Michael or Milton Tyree, 41, of Cambridge, died at 9:22 a.m. at the hospital.

Tyree was using a safety harness to perform a mock hanging on the stage of the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge during a Halloween celebration about 11 p.m. Monday when the equipment failed, authorities said.

Patrons watching the stunt at first did not realize anything was wrong, said Larry Stone of Professional Ambulance of Cambridge.

“It didn’t work right,” he said of the harness. “Five to seven minutes later, someone noticed he was drooling and that’s when he stopped breathing.”

Tyree was helped out of the harness, but by the time emergency medical technicians arrived, his heart had stopped, Stone said.
