J.J. Flannigan, University of Colorado tailback, was arrested early Sunday in Boulder, Colo., on misdemeanor assault and menacing charges after a fight in downtown Boulder, police said.
Flannigan, 20, from Pomona, said the arrest occurred after he retaliated against a man who kicked his truck. Police said Flannigan struck Todd Johnson, and the men wrestled on the ground until police broke up the fight.
Flannigan was charged with two counts of third-degree assault and one count of use of fighting words. Police said he orally threatened Johnson and Johnson’s companion, Karen Cowan, and slapped Cowan.
Friends of Flannigan, who went to the courthouse to pick him up, said they saw the couple hit Flannigan first.
