Doctors still are working to diagnose the cause of an inflamed right ankle that has kept San Diego State nose tackle Brad Burton hospitalized since Sunday night, trainer Don Kaverman said.

Burton was admitted to Sharp Memorial Hospital after a week-old condition worsened over the weekend. No release date has been set and Burton is not expected to play Saturday against Brigham Young.

Ropati Picia, a walk-on from Grossmont College who had played several games as a reserve nose tackle, quit the team last week to work full time, said Ed Schmidt, SDSU’s defensive coordinator.

Jason Swaney, a redshirt sophomore from El Paso, has been moved to defensive line from offensive line to help fill the gap, Schmidt said. Swaney, who was recruited as a defensive lineman but was switched to offense after redshirting as a freshman, recently returned to practice after reporting in August with a stress fracture in his foot.

Inside linebacker Morey Paul has a sprained left wrist but is expected to play against BYU, Kaverman said.

Randy Peterson is back at cornerback after playing wide reciever at Utah Saturday. Peterson was a wide receiver last year, but was moved to defense in spring practice.

VOLLEYBALL

Dee Dee Bigelow had 14 kills as UC San Diego defeated visiting Point Loma Nazarene, 15-7, 15-6, 15-10. Connie Navarro had 14 kills for Point Loma Nazarene. UCSD is 29-8.

MEN’S SOCCER

Damian Glancy scored toward the end of the first half, but host U.S. International University was shut out the rest of the way in a 3-1 overtime loss to the University of Washington. USIU is 5-10 and Washington is 13-4-1.
