A’s Shortstop Weiss Named AL’s Rookie of the Year

Shortstop Walt Weiss of the Oakland Athletics was named American League rookie of the year Wednesday by the Baseball Writers Assn. of America, the third straight season a member of the A’s has been so honored.

Oakland’s Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire won the award the last 2 seasons.

Weiss received 103 points and 17 first-place votes from 28 reporters, 2 from each AL city. Pitcher Bryan Harvey of the Angels was second with 49 points.

Weiss made only 15 errors, just 1 after July 8, and went 58 games without a miscue. He hit .250 with 3 homers, 17 doubles and 39 runs batted in.
