Baseball teams paid more than $26 million to players who did not play last season, topped by Bill Caudill, who didn’t throw one pitch. He cost the Toronto Blue Jays $2 million.

The so-called termination pay included money for players who were released before the season, cut during the year or bought out of their contracts.

The study, prepared by the club owners’ Player Relations Committee, was delivered at the annual general managers’ meeting in Palm Springs.

The $26,225,000 figure was an increase over 1987’s total of $20,783,902. In 1986, teams paid $23,536,412.

The World Series champion Dodgers paid $950,000, about the club average.

Among the expensive cost-cutting players was pitcher Donnie Moore of the Angels at $1 million.
