Khari Johnson to Attend UCI

Khari Johnson, a 6-foot 5 1/2-inch forward at El Toro High School, said Thursday that he will sign a letter of intent to attend UC Irvine. Johnson said he will commit during the early-signing period that begins Wednesday.

Johnson, who averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds for the Chargers last season, said he chose Irvine because of the school’s reputation for academics and the basketball team’s fast-paced style of play.

“I wanted to stay close to home, the school’s academics are great and Coach (Bill) Mulligan’s pressing, running-the-whole-court game was definitely a factor,” Johnson said. “I like the style because I can make good use of my athleticism.”

Johnson, who figures to be a wing player (either the off-guard or small-forward spot) for the Anteaters, said he decided to sign early because he had no doubts about his choice.

“One thing just lights up and suddenly you’re positive of where you want to go,” he said. “Then there’s no reason to hesitate.”
