Dan Goldie eliminated Mats Wilander, the world’s No. 1-ranked player, 6-1, 6-4, Thursday night to reach the quarterfinals of the $642,500 Stockholm Open-Scandinavian tennis tournament at Stockholm.

In other matches, seventh-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain beat Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4; third-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany routed Johan Kriek, 6-2, 6-0; Robert Seguso upset fifth-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria, 7-6, 6-1; Jim Courier surprised 10th-seeded Mikael Pernfors, 6-3, 6-2; Peter Lundgren defeated Magnus Gustafsson in a match of Swedes, 6-3, 6-0; Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden downed Paul Annacone, 6-2, 6-2, and Paulo Cane of Italy turned back Tore Meinecke of West Germany, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Zina Garrison gave the United States a 1-0 lead over Britain as she opened the 60th Wightman Cup competition with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jo Durie.

Garrison took 70 minutes to win the first match in the best-of-7 series, outplaying Durie before a Royal Albert Hall crowd that included Queen Elizabeth II.

Stephanie Rehe upset defending champion Pam Shriver, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, in the second round of a $300,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Worchester, Mass.

In another upset, Helen Kelesi of Canada ousted eighth-seeded Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 7-6, 6-0.
