A San Diego man was shot and killed by a National City police officer early Friday after a chase in a stolen vehicle ended on Encinitas Way in San Diego, police said.

The identity of the 18-year-old man was not released Friday night, pending notification of his family.

At 7:25 a.m., National City police Detective Carey Sullivan, who was driving to work, saw a man stealing a car in the 7700 block of Paradise Valley Road, San Diego police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

Sullivan radioed National City police for help, Cohen said, and, when two patrol cars arrived, the chase began. It continued for a few miles until the man drove into a dead end on Encinitas Way, Cohen said. By that time, San Diego police officers had arrived.

The man, who turned his car around, rammed two police cars and was heading for a third when National City police Officer John Murray, a 13-year veteran, fired two shots, Cohen said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

San Diego police are investigating because the shooting occurred in their jurisdiction.
