Another case of irked Democrats has cropped up in Missouri, where relatives of Harry S. Truman and Franklin D. Roosevelt disputed Republican claims that their famous relations would support George Bush if they were alive today.

Margaret Truman Daniel, Truman’s daughter, and Olive Truman, whose late husband was President Truman’s cousin, issued statements over the weekend in response to such claims.

“It was stupid,” said Daniel. “I’m furious. Dad would be all for Gov. (Michael S.) Dukakis and Sen. (Lloyd) Bentsen.”

Olive Truman, 89 and a resident of a suburban Kansas City nursing home, and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, Roosevelt’s granddaughter, told reporters in Grandview Sunday that they were angered by statements characterizing Truman and Roosevelt as Republicans.

“These are Democratic heroes,” said Roosevelt. “They are not Republican heroes. The Republicans don’t have any of their own, I guess.”

Daniel’s statement was released by U.S. Rep. Alan Wheat (D-Mo.), whose district includes the Truman home and Truman Library in Independence and the Truman farm home in Grandview.
