Local News in Brief : San Fernando OKs Fines for Loud Parties
San Fernando City Council members have passed a law allowing police to levy fines of up to $500 against the hosts of loud and unruly parties if officers are called more than once to quiet them.
The measure was unanimously approved by the five council members Monday night.
The San Fernando Police Department proposed the law to give officers a tool to control rowdy parties that disturb neighborhoods.
It is modeled after a similar measure recently adopted in La Mirada, where officials have used it twice in 3 months--to issue two $400 fines.
Under the law, San Fernando officers will issue a written warning to the host of a loud party the first time they are called to it. If the noise continues, prompting at least one more call from annoyed neighbors, police will consider their response a “special security assignment” and will mail a bill to cover the cost of the services.
Police said that boisterous parties are not a big problem in the 2.4-square-mile city but that they are called out to control parties about twice a week.
