President-elect George Bush opened his first news conference since winning the presidency with a tip of the hat to a Democratic predecessor.

Bush, the first sitting vice president in 152 years to win the White House, smilingly quipped: “I want to thank Martin Van Buren for paving the way.” He was referring to the man who in 1836 moved up from the No. 2 spot and was elected to succeed Andrew Jackson as President. “It’s been a long time, Marty,” Bush said.
