The Department of Transportation has denied a petition by the Independent Federation of Flight Attendants seeking an investigation of Trans World Airlines’ fitness to operate, the airline announced. The petition sought to challenge the privatization of TWA, which occurred last month on the initiative of company Chairman Carl C. Icahn. The department, according to TWA, said it had found that “given the carrier’s profitability and strong cash position, we find that it continues to meet our financial fitness standards.”
