Tennis Roundup : Seguso Fights Off Second-Seeded Gilbert, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4
Unseeded Robert Seguso saved 4 match points before defeating second-seeded Brad Gilbert Wednesday in the second round of the $450,000 International Indoor tennis championships at Wembley, England.
Seguso saved the match points at 5-4 in the second set before advancing to the third round with a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory.
Earlier, third-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union withdrew from the tournament, suffering from an ankle injury, and unseeded Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia upset seventh-seeded Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
John McEnroe defeated Carl-Uwe Steeb of West Germany, 6-4, 6-4, in a $350,000 tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany.
In other matches, Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia defeated Jimmy Connors, 6-2, 6-4; Ivan Lendl beat Tim Mayotte, 6-3, 6-1, and Eric Jelen of West Germany downed Ecuador’s Andres Gomez, 6-2, 6-3.
Jelen got into the tournament only because Boris Becker had to pull out with a foot injury.
