The reputed commander of the Philippine Communist rebel army escaped from prison after he was allowed to attend a birthday party for the former prison warden, officials said. A spokesman for the Philippine Constabulary said approaches to Manila had been sealed off after Romulo Kintanar and his wife, Gloria, fled from the home of Maj. Robelito Comilang, located in another part of the Camp Crame compound in Manila where the couple was being held. The military says Kintanar is commander of the 25,000-member Communist New People’s Army.
