Merrill Lynch Realty has promoted Richard Merrill to president and regional director of its new California Central Region, which incorporates 48 branch offices in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. He had been president of the firm’s Westside Division since 1986.

Ted Patrick has stepped into the position of vice president and national director of marketing of Prudential Real Estate Affiliates Inc. His responsibilities include advertising, public relations, vendor liaison, as well as all other promotional activities.

Coto de Caza, the 4,000-acre master-planned residential community in Southern Orange County, has named Laurie Franz, a veteran in land development, its marketing manager. She has already served the community as marketing assistant.

Director of marketing is a newly created position at Costain Homes, filled by Suzanne Mosher. This professional expansion anticipates growth of the company’s Newport Beach-based activities throughout Southern California. Mosher’s previous experience includes Coto de Caza’s director of marketing.

Laurie Jones of Santa Monica-based Watt Enterprises, won first place for “Internal Audit Involvement in the Joint Venture Process,” in the 1987-88 international competition of the Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation.

The Los Angeles County office of Leighton & Associates, headquartered in Irvine, announced that Richard Lozinsky has joined its firm as staff geologist in Walnut.

The newly elected president of the Los Angeles Convention and Exhibition Center Authority (LACECA) is Madelyn M. Murray. LACECA is responsible for the $390-million Convention Center expansion project.

Morris/Deasy/Partners of Long Beach, has a new name, Morris/Deasy/Panos, with the addition of a new principal, Richard Panos.

Ayala Hotels, operator of San Francisco’s modish Campton Place and member of Preferred Hotels Worldwide, has named two principals for its Checkers Hotel, scheduled to open at 535 S. Grand Ave. early next year. Charlene Nagel, formerly general manager of the Santa Barbara Biltmore, and Patrick C. Willis, formerly with the Rosewood and Hyatt hotel groups, have been named general manager and hotel manager, respectively.
