Jenlane Gee, a third-grade teacher at Sipherd Elementary School in Modesto, was named California’s Teacher of the Year. “She had a good record and an obvious ability to inspire youngsters,” said Bill Honig, state superintendent of public instruction, who announced the award in Sacramento. He said Gee also took a leadership role in the school and in working with parents. “I like to hold my parents accountable as much as I hold my students accountable,” Gee said. “There are expectations. There are deadlines. I call them, and I explain to them.” The winner receives a $15,000 cash award and will represent California in the national Teacher of the Year competition held annually in Washington.
