Free agent second baseman Tommy Herr opted for a shorter drive to work and less money by signing with the Philadelphia Phillies today instead of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who offered him about $100,000 more per season.

Herr, 32, who lives in Lancaster, was acquired by the Phillies Oct. 24 from the Minnesota Twins. He signed for an estimated $800,000 per season. The Dodgers reportedly offered $900,000 with an option for a third year. Herr earned $875,000 last year. Los Angeles, however, made the offer conditional. They could have called it off if they came to terms with Steve Sax, their free agent second baseman.
