Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Water District to Dedicate Etchandy Well

The Etchandy Well, which will save money for water customers in parts of northern Orange County, will be dedicated at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Mike Robinson, spokesman for the Yorba Linda Water District, which owns the well, said the ground-water quality is so good near the well that it is cheaper for the district to pump it out than to buy water elsewhere.

The well, although located at 1231 N. Lakeview Ave. in Anaheim, will provide water for users in the older section of Yorba Linda, but Robinson said it will “benefit everyone in the district, price-wise.”

About half the district’s water is ground water pumped from seven active wells within the district.

It costs the district about $100 an acre-foot to pump water from its wells, compared to the $230-an-acre-foot cost of buying it from such locations as the Colorado River or Northern California.

The Etchandy Well has been producing about 1,250 gallons of water per day for the past 2 weeks. It is named after the family that once owned the well and the strawberry fields that surrounded it. The area has since been developed.
