A. L. (Tony) Diaz, six-time Bay Meadows...
A. L. (Tony) Diaz, six-time Bay Meadows jockey champion, was discovered to be carrying an illegal electrical device after winning the fourth race Saturday aboard Velvet Blue at the San Mateo track.
The 40-year-old native of Mexico was “shaken down” by order of the stewards because of “suspicious circumstances.” An investigation is continuing.
Upon discovering the device in Diaz’s possession, the stewards declared Velvet Blue, a 9-2 shot, a non-starter, and all money wagered on the horse was refunded.
