BEIJING — An explosion on China’s ancient Great Wall near Beijing killed two Chinese and injured several Western tourists today, diplomatic sources said.
The two Chinese were blown to pieces in the blast, which occurred around midday. A group of 24 foreign tourists walking along the Great Wall were caught in the explosion. A New Zealand woman received serious head injuries and was later operated on in a Beijing hospital. Several other tourists were slightly injured, Western diplomats said.
There was speculation that the two Chinese were a young couple who committed suicide with homemade explosives.
