The Rev. Jesse Jackson, veteran jazzman Lionel Hampton, talk-show hostess Oprah Winfrey, Washington Redskins quarterback Doug Williams and Eugene Marino, Archbishop of Atlanta, were all honored with awards Sunday night at the 10th annual American Black Achievement Awards. Jackson, who made a serious run at the Democratic presidential nomination, was honored for his “one-of-a-kind achievements.” Hampton, a vibraphonist and one of the giants of jazz, was given a lifetime achievement award. Singer Gladys Knight won the music award; Winfrey the dramatic arts award, and Williams the athletics award. The winners are chosen by Ebony magazine’s 100 most influential black Americans, and the awards are sponsored by the magazine.
