Chargers Sign Fuller and Jackson

The Chargers, who have lost quarterback Mark Vlasic and linebacker Billy Ray Smith to season-ending injuries, have re-signed quarterback Steve Fuller and linebacker Jeffrey Jackson, Coach Al Saunders said Tuesday.

Fuller, the backup on the Chicago Bears’ 1986 Super Bowl team, is an 8-year NFL veteran. He was one of the Chargers’ final cuts in training camp. He will replace Vlasic on the roster, and along with Babe Laufenberg, will back up Mark Malone when the Chargers play host to the San Francisco 49ers Sunday.

Jackson, who takes Smith’s roster spot, was waived last week to make room for linebacker Cedric Figaro, who was activated from injured reserve.

Jackson, who came to the Chargers as a free agent in 1987, started 6 of 11 games in 1987 before missing the final 2 on the inactive list.

The Chargers will retire Dan Fouts’ jersey, No. 14, in a halftime ceremony Sunday. Posters of Fouts will be given out to fans attending the game.
