Astros Give Bob Watson Front-Office Job
The Houston Astros on Tuesday named Bob Watson, a coach with the Oakland Athletics, their assistant general manager, bringing him back to the team where he made his debut as a professional baseball player 22 years ago.
Watson is one of the few blacks who have made it to a high-profile position in major league baseball since statements on network television by Al Campanis, the Dodgers’ former general manager, in April of 1987 sparked a movement to get more minorities placed in management and administrative positions.
Campanis had said blacks may lack the necessities for such positions.
“We’re delighted to have Bob Watson back in the Houston organization,” General Manager Bill Wood said. “He brings a unique background to our front-office desk with experience as a player and a coach.”
Watson’s job will be to evaluate talent in the organization and provide input in trade discussions with other clubs.
“I have to do a job first,” Watson said. “The job says assistant general manager; I just happen to be black. I want to be the best that I can be.”
