U.S. Jewish Leaders Meet With Sununu
New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu, George Bush’s choice for White House chief of staff, met Wednesday with leaders of the American Jewish community and sought to reassure them that he sympathized with their interests.
About 30 Jewish leaders met for two hours with Sununu, Long Island realtor Jack Stein said.
“It was a very positive meeting. It was the beginning of what we hope will be a process of continuing dialogue to deal with questions on the Jewish agenda,” Stein said. “The governor’s point of view on them was received well, and there was a general wishing of success and a promise of cooperation to him by the members present.”
He said Sununu was asked about one issue that has caused controversy--his refusal to sign a pro-Israel proclamation in 1986.
Sununu was the only governor in the nation to refuse to sign a proclamation condemning a 1975 U.N. resolution equating Zionism with racism. At Wednesday’s meeting, Sununu reiterated that he had refused to sign the proclamation because he felt it was wrong for a governor to make pronouncements on foreign policy.
