Mike Tyson’s boxing career, caught in a tug of war between his manager and promoter Don King, remained on hold when his heavyweight title defense against Frank Bruno was called off.

The fight, scheduled for Las Vegas on Jan. 14, fell victim to a contract dispute between Tyson and his manager, Bill Cayton.

“It will be a long time before Mike Tyson fights again,” said Seth Abraham of HBO Sports, which was scheduled to televise the Bruno fight from the Las Vegas Hilton. “There’s a spider web of litigation out there.”

Tyson’s lawyer, Howard Weitzman, said that a $10-million lawsuit was filed in New York Wednesday against Cayton.

“Basically, the suit alleges that Bill Cayton refuses to respect Mike’s wishes,” Weitzman said.

Cayton said that the hotel “pulled the plug” on the fight because of the dispute over King’s promotional contract with Tyson.

Tyson recently signed a contract giving King the exclusive right to promote his fights over the next 4 years. According to Cayton, that contract amounts to financial suicide for Tyson.
