Algeria has decided to restore full diplomatic ties with Egypt, bringing to 14 the number of Arab states to resume relations broken because of the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty, an official announcement said. Meanwhile, Syria gave rare praise to Egypt, its top rival in the Arab world, for recognizing the newly proclaimed Palestinian state despite what Damascus called pressure from Israel. Diplomats said the remarks--made to Reuters news agency by a senior government official--were by far the warmest by Syria toward Egypt since 1979, when Damascus cut its diplomatic ties with Cairo.
