Glendale Tower Will Be Tallest

Thousands of red and white balloons--the colors of Carnation--will mark Wednesday’s ground breaking for the $105-million Carnation Building in Glendale.

The 22-story, 525,000-square-foot structure at 800 N. Brand Blvd. will be the city’s tallest and largest building, according to John Miller of Dallas-based Lincoln Property Co., the developer with the Los Angeles-based Carnation Co.

When the tower is completed in September, 1990, Carnation will occupy 250,000 square feet and Glendale Federal will occupy 100,000 square feet, leaving about 150,000 square feet for other tenants, Miller said. Lincoln Property will provide management and leasing services for the building.

“This will be the largest single development built specifically as a company’s corporate headquarters in a Los Angeles suburb,” Miller said.

Carnation, founded in 1899, has been based at 5045 Wilshire Blvd. for 39 years.

The four-acre Glendale site, bounded by Brand Boulevard, Monterey Road, Louise Street and the Verdugo Wash Channel and a block north of the Ventura (134) Freeway, will offer Carnation a central location and the space it needs to expand, according to Timm Crull, president and chief executive officer of Carnation.

Designed by Johnson Fain Pereira Associates, Los Angeles, the design includes a 37,000-square-foot plaza fronting the tower, designed in the manner of French parterres or ornamental gardens. An adjoining parking garage will have seven levels of parking; two below and five above grade.

The project team includes Dinwiddie Construction Co., general contractor; SWA Group, landscape architecture; James A. Knowles & Associates, mechanical engineers; Levine Seegal, electrical engineers, and CBM Engineers Inc., structural engineers.
