Roundup : Baker, Palys Help Temple Roll Past Boston College

Matt Baker completed touchdown passes of 80, 42, and 33 yards to Mike Palys, and Temple turned 3 first-half interceptions into scores as the Owls defeated Boston College, 45-28, Saturday at Philadelphia in both teams’ season finale.

Todd McNair scored a pair of touchdowns on short runs and rushed for 121 yards for Temple (4-7). Boston College, which opened the season by losing to USC, 34-7, finished at 3-8.

Tennessee 14, Vanderbilt 7--Tailback Keith Davis rushed for 162 yards and scored the winning touchdown on a 5-yard run in the third quarter as the Volunteers beat the Commodores in a Southeastern Conference game at Nashville, Tenn.

The victory was the fifth in a row for Tennessee (5-6, 3-4), which began the season by losing 6 straight. Vanderbilt finished at 3-8 and 2-5.

Mississippi 33, Mississippi St. 6--Mark Young threw 3 touchdown passes, 2 to Pat Coleman, to tie a school record as the Rebels beat their Southeastern Conference rival at Jackson, Miss.

Young’s 13-yard scoring pass to Willie Green put Misissippi ahead 23-6 with 6:57 to play in the third quarter. The touchdown pass was the 31st of Young’s career, tying him with Archie Manning, 1968-70, and Kent Austin, 1981-85.

Mississippi finished 5-6 and 3-4. Mississippi State, losers of 10 straight, finished at 1-10 and 0-7.

Southern U. 10, Grambling St. 3--Curtis Patterson ran 17 yards for the winning touchdown with 1:53 remaining as Southern University beat its Southwestern Conference rival, in the Bayou Classic at New Orleans.

Eddie Robinson, concluding his 48th season at Grambling, is the nation’s winningest college coach with a record of 349-122-15.
