Poland’s outlawed Solidarity trade union agreed to terms for a live television debate this week between its leader, Lech Walesa, and Alfred Miodowicz, head of the government-sponsored trade union alliance, a Solidarity aide said. The debate, scheduled for Wednesday after the main evening news, will take place in the Warsaw studios of Polish Television and will be broadcast nationwide. The agreement marked a concession by Walesa, who wanted the debate held in Gdansk’s Lenin Shipyard, birthplace of Solidarity, before an audience of workers. It would be the first time that Walesa has been allowed to appear live on state-controlled Polish television to present his reasons for wanting Solidarity made legal again.
