Cincinnati Reds infielder Ron Oester, rebounding from a career-threatening knee injury, was named the 1988 winner of baseball’s Hutch Award, which is given to an athlete who overcomes some form of adversity.

The award is named after the late Fred Hutchinson, a former major league pitcher and manager who was managing the Reds when he died of cancer in 1964.
