College Basketball Roundup : No. 10 North Carolina Gets Past Stanford, 87-76

Jeff Lebo scored 24 points and Kevin Madden had 6 points in a 13-2 go-ahead run in the second half Monday night as 10th-ranked North Carolina beat Stanford, 87-76, at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Lebo made a 3-point jumper that started the decisive run and gave the Tar Heels (4-1) a 51-49 lead with 15:33 left. Madden, who had 16 points, made the next 3 baskets.

Scott Meinert scored 7 points in a 10-2 spurt that put Stanford (1-2) ahead, 36-33, late in the first half, and the Cardinal was ahead, 43-40, at halftime.

Todd Lichti scored 20 points for Stanford but sat out 5 minutes of the second half with 4 fouls.

Syracuse 91, Cornell 66--Stephen Thompson scored 18 points and Derrick Coleman added 17 as the fourth-ranked Orangemen wore down the Big Red at Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse (5-0) made its first 6 shots and was never threatened in beating Cornell (1-1) for the 20th consecutive time, dating to 1968.

N.C. State 87, Akron 67--Rodney Monroe scored 26 points and Avie Lester 22 as the 16th-ranked Wolfpack downed the Zips at Raleigh, N.C.

North Carolina State (2-0) struggled to a 41-39 halftime lead before Monroe scored 7 points in a 12-2 run early in the second half and pulled away.

Missouri 97, Tennessee Martin 55--Byron Irvin scored 18 points and the eighth-ranked Tigers held the Pacers to 21 points in the second half of a victory at Columbia, Mo.

It was the first game for Missouri (4-1) since losing, 86-84, in overtime to Syracuse in the final of the Big Apple NIT on Friday.

Georgia Tech 95, Coastal Carolina 65--Dennis Scott made six 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 25 points as the 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets trounced the Chanticleers at Atlanta.

Brian Oliver added 19 points and Tom Hammonds had 18 for Georgia Tech (2-0).

Seton Hall 92, Kansas 81--Ramon Ramos scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half as the Pirates beat the Jayhawks in the championship game of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, Alaska.

The Pirates (3-0) trailed, 54-53, with 15:08 left before taking charge with a 12-4 run.

Kevin Pritchard scored 17 points for Kansas (2-1).

Kentucky 89, California 71--Derrick Miller scored 36 points, including seven 3-pointers, to lead the Wildcats past the Bears for third place in the Great Alaska Shootout.

Chris Mills added 21 points and LeRon Ellis had 14 for Kentucky (2-2). Keith Smith scored 19 points for Cal (1-2).

Notre Dame 92, St. Bonaventure 72--Freshman LaPhonso Ellis came off the bench to score 27 points and the Irish opened their season with a victory over the Bonnies at South Bend, Ind.

Rocky Llewellyn scored 17 for St. Bonaventure (0-1).

Siena 80, Pittsburgh 79--Steve McCoy stole a pass and scored at the buzzer to give the Saints an upset of the Panthers at Pittsburgh.

Marc Brown scored 21 points for Siena (1-1), and Bobby Martin had 21 for Pitt (1-1).

Wisconsin 98, Ferris State 61--Danny Jones scored 19 points as the Badgers rolled past the Bulldogs at Madison, Wis.

Trent Jackson added 17 points for the Badgers (2-0). Richard Legreair had 17 for Ferris (1-1).

Northwestern 100, Ill. Wesleyan 61--Walker Lambiotte scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Brian Schwabe added 19 points as the Wildcats overwhelmed the Titans at Evanston, Ill.

The outcome seemed clear from the start as Northwestern (2-0) scored the first 11 points and held a 22-2 lead after 7 1/2 minutes.

Michigan State 98, Furman 68--Steve Smith had 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Spartans won their 12th consecutive opener under Coach Jud Heathcote by routing the Paladins at East Lansing, Mich.
