An animal rights activist accused of planting a bomb at a surgical instruments company that experiments on dogs pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of attempted murder, possession of explosives and manufacturing a bomb.

Fran Stephanie Trutt, 33, of New York City did not speak during her brief appearance in Stamford Superior Court except to say: “Definitely not guilty.” Superior Court Judge Martin Nigro denied a motion by her public defender to lower bail from $500,000 to $60,000, and she remained in custody.

Trutt was arrested Nov. 11 near U.S. Surgical Corp.’s Norwalk headquarters.
