Bail was halved Wednesday for the gunman who allegedly shot three people last week as they walked in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Rolando Rosario Ignacio, 25, of Encanto is charged with trying to murder Robert Mengar, 59; Mengar’s fiancee, Cynthia Conyiers, 37, and Susan Snyder, 29. Both Mengar and Conyiers remain hospitalized.

Despite the reduction from $1 million to $500,000, attorneys said Ignacio won’t be able to post bail.

The bail was lowered by San Diego Municipal Judge Robert McDonald, at the request of Ignacio’s lawyer, Roger Spaulding.

“Your Honor, this is the highest bail I’ve ever seen in my legal career. No one died,” Spaulding said.

“Well, the issue is how much bail is required to ensure his appearance in court,” responded the judge.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Bill Collins said Ignacio is a threat to the public. “Mr. Ignacio didn’t know those people. He would have shot more people, but he ran out of ammunition,” he said. “He still constitutes a substantial threat to the public.”

No motive for the shootings has been given. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 9.
