A suspected car thief was arrested early Wednesday after leading authorities on a 3-hour, 170-mile high-speed chase from West Hollywood to Banning and back to Los Angeles, officials said.

Roger J. Robb, 19, was booked at the Men’s Central Jail on suspicion of auto theft, reckless driving and evading arrest.

The chase started when sheriff’s deputies saw a black Mazda RX-7 run a red light in West Hollywood at 11:39 p.m. Tuesday and a check of the car’s license plate number revealed it had been stolen in San Diego, Lt. Bob Martinez said.

Deputies pursued the car south to the Santa Monica Freeway and then to Riverside County, about 85 miles away, at speeds of up to 85 m.p.h. There, the driver turned around and headed back toward Los Angeles, authorities said.
