The Department of Defense has confirmed that if the Presidio of San Francisco were closed as a military base, the choice 1,700-acre parcel would remain in the public domain. Rep. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said she received the confirmation in a letter from Hayden C. Bryan, executive director of the Commission on Base Realignment and Closure. The commission, Boxer said, told her that if the Presidio were closed its ownership would revert to the Department of the Interior as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The commission is preparing for Congress recommendations on which military bases nationwide could be closed without jeopardizing national security.
