Local News in Brief : Area Closed Off Due to Leaking Ammonia
Police closed off a one-square-mile area of Compton’s warehouse district early Thursday while firefighters mopped up a potentially dangerous ammonia leak.
No one was injured by the toxic fumes, which seeped out of a storage tank at the Ralphs grocery warehouse on South Wilmington Avenue, Police Lt. Gary Anderson said. Maintenance crews were repairing a valve in the storage tank when the ammonia began leaking about 1 a.m., police and fire officials said.
Firefighters cleaned up the spill by 3:45 a.m.
