Florence Griffith Joyner, the sprinter who set two world records and won three Olympic gold medals and one silver, was named winner of the Jesse Owens Memorial Award as the nation’s outstanding track and field athlete for 1988 by The Athletics Congress at its annual convention in Phoenix.

In the balloting by members of the media and the TAC, the national governing body for the sport, Griffith Joyner received 1,418 points.

Her sister-in-law, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, winner of the Owens Award in 1987, who took two Olympic golds and broke the world heptathlon record twice this year, finished second with 1,070 points.

Carl Lewis, winner of golds in the 100 and long jump and a silver in the 200 at the Seoul Games, placed third with 556 points.
