Local News in Brief : Garden Grove : Teen Killed in Freeway Crash in Police Chase

One teen-ager was killed and another injured when their car crashed through a guardrail during a police chase on the Garden Grove Freeway on Saturday night, authorities said Sunday.

The pair were trying to elude officers who had determined that the Toyota hatchback they were driving had been stolen from Santa Ana, Garden Grove police said.

The chase began about 9 p.m. after officers saw the car speeding on Fairview Street, police said.

Phuvinh Nguyen, 16, of Orange died at UCI Medical Center shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, a spokesman for the Orange County coroner’s office said. The name of the other teen-ager was unavailable, but a hospital spokeswoman said he was in fair condition.

According to police, both teen-agers were thrown from the car after it veered across the freeway, struck the center divider and then collided with the police car that was chasing them.

The two officers in the car were treated for minor injuries at AMI Medical Center of Garden Grove and released, authorities said.

Police said the surviving suspect will be charged with possession of stolen property and evading arrest.
