PHOENIX — A California scientist who vanished more than 18 months ago, leaving federal authorities worried about his knowledge of the research laboratory where he worked, was arrested on federal charges here Monday.
The FBI confirmed the arrest of chemist Ronald K. Stump, who had worked at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., for more than 25 years before he disappeared in April, 1987.
Stump told Lawrence Livermore officials he suspected that he had cancer and asked for extended sick leave. However, the government has charged Stump with fraud over his alleged role in the laboratory’s purchase of a $250,000 piece of equipment that malfunctioned.
