Local News in Brief : Westminster : Bicyclist Critically Injured in Accident
An 18-year-old bicyclist was critically injured Tuesday when he was struck by a pickup as he attempted to cross busy Brookhurst Avenue, police said.
Westminster Police Sgt. Philip Marshall said that Martin Chavez Sandoval of Garden Grove sustained major injuries when he was hit at 4:28 p.m. while riding a bicycle across Brookhurst south of McFadden Avenue.
Chavez, who was treated by paramedics at the scene, was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
Marshall said it appeared that Chavez, who was leaving a shopping center and following another bicyclist across the street, rode directly into the path of the pickup.
