Azusa : Council Recall Drive OKd

City Clerk Adolph A. Solis on Monday approved petitions to recall City Councilmen Harry L. Stemrich and Tony D. Naranjo. Recall proponents have until April 4 to gather the 2,806 signatures necessary to force an election.
Azusa has 14,031 registered voters, according to the last count by the county.
Should the petitioners be successful, the City Council would have to set an election date within 3 months after certification of the signatures. Solis said a recall ballot would also ask voters to decide whether the seats should be filled by appointment or special election if the recall is successful.
Some of the recall proponents were members of a citizens group, Azusans for a Better Community, which helped elect Stemrich, Naranjo and Mayor Eugene F. Moses in April.
Proponents charge that the councilmen have fallen through on campaign promises of unity, made unwarranted attacks on Moses and have allowed continued apartment construction despite pledges to end construction of multifamily dwellings.
Both councilmen deny the charges and have hired a political consultant to help fend off any effort to oust them.
