College Basketball Roundup : Florida State Comes Back to Beat Stetson, 91-74

Tony Dawson scored 27 points and Tharon Mayes got the first 6 points of a 16-0 second-half run Friday night as 13th-ranked Florida State beat Stetson, 91-74, at Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State (4-0) led, 61-58, before Mayes started the 16-point run. The Seminoles’ largest lead was 87-62 after Dawson scored on a driving layup with 1:59 left.

Florida State failed to score 100 points for the first time this season.

Stetson (3-2) led by as many as 13 points in the first half, which ended 35-35.

Bjorn Gehrke of Stetson scored 29 points, including 6 3-pointers.

George McCloud, who didn’t score in the first 12 minutes of the game, finished with 18 points for Florida State, and Mayes added 17.

Stetson Coach Glenn Wilkes said of McCloud and Dawson, “We think they are probably the two best players in the state. In fact, we’d been arguing who was the best.”

Dawson, who scored 19 points in the second half, made 12 of 18 shots, including 3 3-pointers.

“Coach told me to shoot the 3-pointers when I’m open,” said Dawson, who is averaging 25.7 points a game.

St. Mary’s 76, Penn State 52--Al Lewis scored 26 points for the unbeaten Gaels, who shot 61% in the opening game of the Cougar tournament at Provo, Utah.

St. Mary’s (5-0) took command with an 8-0 run just before halftime and led at the intermission, 37-28.

Tom Hovasse scored 19 points for Penn State (2-1). The Nittany Lions shot 42%.

BYU 87, Texas Arlington 70--Andy Toolson scored 25 points and Michael Smith added 20 for the Cougars in the second game of the Cougar tournament, advancing to tonight’s final against St. Mary’s.

BYU led, 59-46, with 14:05 to go in the game, but Texas Arlington used an 11-0 streak to narrow the gap to 59-57. BYU then pulled away with a 20-8 run.

Willie Brand led Texas Arlington (1-4) with 21 points.

The Cougars (2-3) out-rebounded the Mavericks, 44-26, with Toolson getting 13 and Smith 9.

Texas 96, Lehigh 73--Lance Blanks, a 6-foot 4-inch junior transfer from Virginia, had 37 points and 13 rebounds for Texas in the first round of the Longhorn tournament at Austin, Tex.

Blanks made 15 of 19 shots, including 7 of 9 from 3-point range.

Alvin Heggs added 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Longhorns (5-1).

Lehigh (2-3) was led by reserve freshman Bob Krizansky, who scored 24 points.

Tennessee Chattanooga 77, Jacksonville 76--In the other game of the Longhorn tournament, the Moccasins (2-3) outlasted the Dolphins (3-3) in overtime and will meet Texas tonight for the championship.

Daren Chandler led the winners with 26 points, including a tip-in for the winning points with one second left in overtime.

Indiana 85, Virginia Commonwealth 68--Todd Jadlow scored all of his 17 points in the first half when Indiana built a 25-point lead in the first game of the Indiana tournament at Bloomington, Ind.

The Hoosiers (4-4), off to their slowest start ever under Coach Bob Knight, opened the game with a 16-1 run. Joe Hillman started the surge with 4 straight points. He finished with 13.

Virginia Commonwealth (0-2) was led by Chris Cheeks with 21 points and Vince Wilson with 15.

Santa Clara 73, Alcorn State 47--Nils Becker scored 9 of his 12 points in the first half when the Broncos built a 23-point lead in the second game game of the Indiana tournament.

Santa Clara (4-0) will meet Indiana for the championship tonight.

Alcorn State (1-6) hit just 6 of 27 shots in the first half for 22%. Santa Clara had 25 first-half rebounds to 12 for Alcorn State.

Fresno State 99, USIU 62--Jervis Cole made 9 of 11 shots, including all 3 3-point tries, to score 26 points for the Bulldogs at Fresno.

Fresno State dominated the boards by a 54-34 margin in raising its record to 3-3.

U.S. International, led by Paul Wilson’s 24 points, dropped to 3-5.
