German Weekly Lauds Gorbachev

HAMBURG, West Germany —
The West German newsmagazine Der Spiegel chose Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev as its “Man of the Year” for 1988.
In its latest edition, the magazine said it was making the award as a recognition of Gorbachev’s statesmanship.
His major achievement, the weekly said, was as “the reformer of a system which had been believed to be impossible to reform.”
