Aztecs Finished by Hawaii in Volleyball

Hawaii, the defending national champion in NCAA Division I women’s volleyball, defeated San Diego State, 15-4, 15-8, 15-13, late Friday in a Northwest Region semifinal in Hawaii.

SDSU, the fourth-seeded team in the region, finished the season 26-12, including a first-round victory over San Jose State. Hawaii (31-2), top-seeded and ranked third in the nation, advanced to the regional final against Pacific (21-12) for the third consecutive year.

Jackie Mendez led SDSU with 12 kills and added 6 digs. Angela Martin had 11 kills and 8 digs and Amy Erben had 10 kills and 6 digs in the match that lasted 1 hour 18 minutes.

GOLF

San Diego’s Steve Haase and David Patchin took the two amateur sponsor exemption spots for February’s Sherson Lehman Hutton Open at the fifth Sherson Lehman Hutton Open Amateur Qualifying tournament at Torrey Pines South.

Haase shot a 4-under-par 68 and Patchin shot a 1-under-par at 71 during the one-day tournament that attracted 120 competitors.

There was a 3-way tie at third, with San Diego residents Bob Imlay and Clinton Whitelaw and Orrin Vincent of Seattle finishing at par.

Haase and Patchin will be the only amateurs playing in the tournament.

TENNIS

Semifinal rounds in the men’s 45s set up an all-San Diego County final today at the Senior Grand Prix Masters Championships at Rancho Bernardo Inn.

Bill Bethard of La Jolla will play second-seeded Jim Perley of Coronado for the championship. Bethard defeated the top-seeded Leland Housman of San Diego, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, to reach the final. Perley had an easy, two-set match.

Richard Ravreby of Encinitas advanced by default and will meet No. 1-seeded Guy Gritz of Palm Springs in the men’s 35s.

Other county players who advanced are Virginia Glass of San Diego in the women’s 60s, who will play No. 1 Phyllis Adler of Los Angeles. In the women’s 45s, Sally Huss of Bonsall, a finalist in the women’s 40s of last weekend’s Senior National Hardcourt Championship in La Jolla, made the finals for the second time in 7 days. She will meet Charleen Hillebrand of San Pedro in the title match.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Whalen Elmore made two free throws with 4 seconds remaining to lift Whittier past Point Loma Nazarene, 90-88, at Whittier.

Senior guard Brian Thurston scored a game-high 29 points for PLNC but was called for a foul on Elmore at the top of the key as Whittier was working for a final shot.

Senior forward Mark Ryan scored 21 points, and sophomore guard Eric Bland added 15 for PLNC, which led, 50-46, at the half.

Center David Kirksey scored a game-high 24 points and 6-10 backup center John Burkhardt blocked a school record 9 shots and had 14 rebounds to lead Christian Heritage to a 104-63 victory over Christ College Irvine at Granite Hills High.

A 7-1 record marks the best start for Christian Heritage, which also set a school record with 14 blocks. Christ College Irvine fell to 3-6.

Bill Soucie made 8 of 9 shots for 21 points off the bench for Christian Heritage.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Senior Shannon Anderson led Point Loma Nazarene in a 107-64 nonleague loss to Cal State Stanislaus (7-0) in Turlock.

Anderson had 19 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Camille Armijo added 15 points. Stanislaus sophomore Lisa Dumford had 37 points, including seven 3-pointers.

PLNC dropped to 6-2.

Paula Mascari scored 15 points to lead the University of San Diego over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 61-58, in a nonconference game at San Luis Obispo.
