Former Raider quarterback Jim Plunkett was presented with the first Ernie Davis Award at Atlantic City, N.J., recognizing his service to mankind and superior athletic excellence.
The award was established by the Leukemia Society of America to honor Davis’ memory “and his legacy of love for humanity,” according to a release from the organization.
Davis, the 1961 Heisman Trophy recipient from Syracuse University, died of leukemia in 1963. He was the first black to win the Heisman.
