A power struggle to determine the next “drug lord” of Oakland was predicted by an Alameda County law enforcement official in the wake of the arrest of Darryl (Little D) Reed, who, at age 20, headed a gang that sold as much as $900,000 in drugs in a single day. Reed is now facing charges that could bring him a life prison term, and Deputy Dist. Atty. Russ Giuntini said five other drug peddlers are vying to succeed him. “Everyone knows who the players are,” said Giuntini. “But trying to get a legal arrest is another matter. You can’t try these guys on rumor and innuendo.” Reed was allegedly cooking cocaine powder into $3 million worth of crack in a large soup pan when he was arrested.
