Share

An unidentified man who reportedly was swinging a club and throwing rocks at passing cars was shot by two Garden Grove police officers after he struck one of the officers.

Lt. Chuck Gibbs said the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in front of Garden Grove Mazda at 13631 Harbor Blvd. When the two officers, who were not identified, approached the suspect, he swung his metal club at them, striking one of the policemen on the wrist, Gibbs said.

When the suspect continued to advance on the officers, they both opened fire, striking him in the torso, he said.

The man was undergoing surgery Monday night at UCI Medical Center, where he was reported in very critical condition, Gibbs said. If he survives, the suspect will be arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, he said.

Police closed the southbound lanes of Harbor Boulevard for almost 5 hours during the investigation at the scene, Gibbs said.

The district attorney’s office also is investigating the incident, which is the usual procedure after an officer-involved shooting.

The two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, Gibbs said.
