Local : County Imposes Hiring Freeze

Share

The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously today to implement a countywide hiring freeze in hopes of heading off a major financial crisis in the next few months.

County officials did not mention the hundreds of layoffs they fear will be necessary to balance the fiscal year budget, but supervisors voiced concern that the county must do more extensive long-range planning to avoid similar budget crunches in the future.

“Right around the corner, we should be looking at what’s in the future,” said Supervisor Don R. Roth. “I think we owe it to our employees to be able to look ahead to the ‘89-90 budget so we’re not here in the same situation a year from today.”

County Administrative Officer Larry Parrish said he would report back to the board on Jan. 3 on the outcome of negotiations with the county’s judges in seeking a joint application to the state for about $12 million to pay for court operations.
